Copyright & Content Rights Policy
Last updated: May 18, 2026
Smulie Co. Ltd. ("Smulie", "we", "us", or "our") operates Simpia, Pianify and related Smulie mobile applications and websites, including https://hi.smulie.io/ (together, the "Service"). Smulie builds technology that helps more people experience, learn, and play music. Our mission is to democratize music education by combining thoughtful pedagogy, interactive practice tools, and AI-assisted learning. We believe that broad access to music education should go hand in hand with respect for composers, songwriters, performers, publishers, producers, educators, and other rights holders.
This Copyright & Content Rights Policy explains how we approach copyright, music rights, third-party content, and copyright-related requests. It is a public summary of our content principles and does not replace any separate written agreement between Smulie and a rights holder, partner, vendor, user, or platform.
Smulie's Learning Technology and Course Experience
Smulie's paid Service is centered on access to two proprietary learning components: Smulie's learning technology and Smulie's structured course experience. Users purchase access to these learning components through the Service; they do not purchase ownership of any software, course content, music, notation, recordings, data, models, or other Content.
•Smulie learning technology: Smulie researches, develops, and operates proprietary technology for interactive music learning, including real-time piano and keyboard recognition, multi-note and chord detection, MIDI and audio analysis, practice feedback, music-understanding tools, and AI-assisted features that support chord, notation, and learning-feedback experiences. These technologies and their implementation may be protected, where applicable, by copyright in software and expressive materials, trade secret, know-how, database rights, contractual rights, and other intellectual property rights. Smulie does not claim copyright in abstract ideas, musical facts, learning methods, or underlying musical concepts.
•Smulie course experience: Smulie's courses, course tree, lesson sequence, exercises, explanations, feedback flows, assessments, original learning materials, and curriculum design are created by or for Smulie with input from instructors, piano teachers, music educators, user research, and backward-design methodology. Smulie owns, controls, or licenses the proprietary and protectable elements of this course experience to the extent applicable under relevant agreements and law. This does not mean Smulie claims ownership of underlying public-domain compositions or third-party musical works.
1. Content Covered by This Policy
The Service may include or display different types of content, including:
•lesson text, curriculum, exercises, feedback, practice prompts, and other educational materials;
•musical arrangements, excerpts, notation, MIDI files, backing tracks, sound recordings, audio effects, and related learning assets;
•app interfaces, software, graphics, icons, images, videos, branding, and product content;
•user-submitted or user-generated content, if a feature allows users to upload, record, post, share, or otherwise submit content;
•third-party content made available through authorized integrations, links, embeds, APIs, app stores, content platforms, or other third-party services.
For convenience, we refer to these materials collectively as "Content".
2. Our Rights and Clearance Approach
Smulie uses a combination of original, commissioned, licensed, authorized, public-domain, platform-provided, and user-provided Content. Because music rights are layered and vary by territory, format, platform, and use case, we review Content based on the nature of the material and the way it appears in the Service.
Smulie may source, review, or administer certain Content through relationships with affiliated companies, commercial partners, licensors, vendors, music libraries, publishers, platforms, or direct rights holders, depending on the relevant product use.
Depending on the Content, relevant rights may include copyright in the underlying musical work, lyrics, arrangement, notation, sound recording, performance, phonogram, artwork, video, database, software, trademark, and related rights. These rights may be owned, administered, or represented by different parties.
Our general approach is:
•Original and commissioned Content: Smulie-created lessons, exercises, sound design, app assets, software, and proprietary elements of Smulie-created arrangements, MIDI realizations, recordings, lesson design, annotations, and AI-assisted educational features are owned, licensed, controlled, or used by Smulie to the extent applicable under relevant agreements and law.
•Licensed or authorized Content: Where third-party Content is used, Smulie seeks to source it through appropriate commercial, publisher, library, platform, partner, direct-rights-holder, or other authorization channels for the relevant product use.
•Public-domain repertoire: Some learning materials may be based on compositions that are in the public domain in one or more relevant territories. Smulie does not claim ownership of underlying public-domain compositions. Smulie may, however, own, control, or license proprietary elements of its own arrangements, editions, MIDI realizations, recordings, lesson design, annotations, and related educational materials.
•Third-party platform Content: Some Content may be shown through third-party platforms or official APIs. In those cases, the Content remains subject to the third party's terms, technical controls, rights-management systems, and availability rules.
•User-provided Content: If users submit Content to the Service, they are responsible for having the rights and permissions needed for that submission and for any use they make of the Service.
Our catalog may change over time. Content may be added, modified, replaced, restricted, disabled, or removed based on product design, licensing terms, territory, platform requirements, rights-holder requests, or internal review.
3. Educational Use and Product Philosophy
Simpia, Pianify is designed as an educational tool. The Service helps users practice music, understand musical structure, receive feedback, and build instrument skills through interactive exercises and AI-assisted learning.
References to education, practice, or learning describe the purpose of the Service. They are not intended to override copyright law, platform terms, or any rights-holder agreement. Smulie respects the rights of creators and aims to balance access to music education with responsible use of protected works.
4. Ownership of Smulie Materials
Unless otherwise stated, the Service, software, curriculum, product design, lesson structure, original exercises, graphics, trademarks, logos, and proprietary elements of Smulie-created learning materials are owned, controlled, or licensed by Smulie or its licensors to the extent applicable.
Users may access the Service only for personal, non-commercial learning and practice, subject to our Terms of Service and any applicable subscription, app-store, or platform terms.
No part of the Service may be copied, extracted, scraped, downloaded, redistributed, sold, sublicensed, reverse engineered, publicly performed, publicly communicated, used to train competing systems, or otherwise exploited except as expressly allowed by Smulie in writing or by the normal in-app functionality of the Service.
5. No Public License Granted
This policy does not grant any license to Smulie Content, third-party Content, music, sound recordings, data, software, trademarks, or other materials. All rights not expressly granted are reserved by Smulie, its licensors, and the relevant rights holders.
Downloading the app, accessing the website, viewing Content, or using a learning feature does not transfer ownership of any Content to the user.
6. Third-Party Links, Embeds, and APIs
The Service may include links to or embedded displays of third-party materials, including videos or other media made available through official third-party platform tools.
When Smulie uses a third-party API, embed, webview, player, or platform integration, we aim to follow the applicable platform terms and technical requirements. For example, where YouTube content is displayed through official YouTube webview, Smulie does not design the Service to download, store, re-upload, or rebroadcast the underlying YouTube audiovisual content outside the authorized YouTube player or API experience (https://developers.google.com/youtube/terms/api-services-terms-of-service). Third-party platforms control their own content availability, rights-management systems, monetization, takedown processes, and embedding settings. Smulie does not own or endorse all third-party materials that may be reachable through such integrations. If third-party Content becomes unavailable, restricted, disputed, or reported, Smulie may remove or disable the relevant link, embed, reference, or integration.
7. Rights-Holder Inquiries and Copyright Notices
Smulie takes copyright inquiries seriously. Rights holders, publishers, collective management organizations, authorized representatives, performers, producers, and other parties with a good-faith concern may contact us.

8. Review and Response Process
After receiving a copyright inquiry or notice, Smulie may:
•acknowledge receipt and open an internal review;
•ask for additional information or documentation;
•restrict, disable, remove, replace, or geo-limit Content while reviewing the matter;
•contact relevant vendors, licensors, platforms, users, or partners;
•preserve relevant records for compliance, dispute resolution, or legal purposes;
•restore or maintain Content where we determine that the use is authorized, non-infringing, otherwise permitted, or not sufficiently identified.
Our response will depend on the nature of the request, the Content involved, the rights asserted, applicable law, platform terms, and any relevant agreements.
9. Repeat Infringement and Misuse
Where user-submitted Content is supported, Smulie may suspend or terminate accounts or restrict features for users who repeatedly infringe rights, submit unauthorized Content, misuse reporting tools, attempt to extract protected Content, or otherwise violate our Terms of Service.
Smulie may also take technical or legal measures against scraping, unauthorized extraction, circumvention, redistribution, commercial exploitation, or misuse of the Service or its Content.
10. Brand Independence
Simpia, Pianify are developed and published by Smulie Co. Ltd. Unless expressly stated, Smulie is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or associated with any third-party music education application, publisher, label, platform, artist, or rights-management organization.
References to third-party names, songs, artists, platforms, publishers, or products are for identification, attribution, interoperability, education, licensing, or compatibility purposes only and do not imply endorsement or ownership by Smulie.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Copyright & Content Rights Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our Service, content catalog, legal requirements, platform rules, or rights-management practices. The updated version will be effective when posted, unless a different effective date is stated.
